Mission Statement
BKPA stands for The Bengali Kids of Princeton Area. As American Bengali kids and young adults, our goals are to pursue higher education, establish ourselves as good citizens, and give back to and support our local and global communities.
Bengali is the 7th most spoken language in the world. As an organization, our mission is to learn about and expose others to our Bengali culture, engage with our communities, and grow as individuals. Along with celebrating both our American and Bengali cultures, we also work to stay informed about social issues prominent in society.
To support this mission our organization has four pillars: Educational, Cultural, Literary, and Charitable.
ABOUT BKPA
BKPA has four pillars around which we structure our activities: Educational, Charitable, Literary, and Cultural. We host events, classes, fundraisers, and more to support goals in each of these areas.
As a volunteer-run organization for kids, our programs are generated by and focused on kids.
BKPA was founded in the early 2000s by Anita Dam. Anita was inspired to create a community where she could learn about, celebrate, and share her heritage and connect with other Bengali and Bengali-American kids. This drive to forge cultural connections has led to BKPA blossoming into an international community. BKPA started at Anita’s kitchen table as a club holding a few annual events and a weekly informal Bangla class, and has now grown to host multiple events per year with a community around the globe.
ABOUT BENGALI
Did you know that the US Government considers the Bengali language to be a critical language for the future of our country? It is the 7th most spoken language in the world. For this reason and more, the US State Department believes in establishing relationships with the Bengali language and people for future development and prosperity.
The Bengali Kids of Princeton Area -BKPA members have distinct cultural identities as American Bengalis. We hope our organization can help bridge the gap between American and Bengali cultures. In this rapidly globalizing world, it is important to forge connections across cultures and countries. BKPA’s focus is to build these bridges in all parts of life, starting with the paths available from the popularity of our language. Through events, trips, and other programs we share Bengali culture with our local communities and maintain relationships with our friends abroad.
